Midway was founded in 1976 as a division of Bally, a company in the field of games and casinos. Early successes are recorded in the U.S. by selling the now become classics games Space Invaders and Pac -Man.

The pinball manufacturer Williams bought Midway in 1988.

In 2003, the publisher brought the Games legend and id Software co-founder John Romero and his colleagues Tom Hall as a project manager on board. In addition, until 2007 was Alexander Brandon Audio Director at Midway Games, where he worked on a variety of game soundtracks. In December 2008, investor Sumner Redstone sold his 87 - percent share in the private investor Mark Thomas for $ 100,000. On 12 February 2009 Midway declared its insolvency and filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. Prior to this, no new lender will be found who could settle the outstanding debts of about 150 million U.S. dollars.
