Mihkel Veske

Mihkel Veske (. * 16 Januarjul / January 28 1843greg in Holstre, then parish Vilimeeste, today rural community Paistu, Viljandi County, Estonia, .. . † 4 Maijul / May 16 1890greg in Kazan ) was an Estonian poet and linguist.

Life

Mihkel Veske was born on a farm in the village Veske Holstre ( German Holstferhof ) in Central Estonia. He attended the village school in Pullerits, the parish school in Paistu and the Gymnasium in Tartu. He then went 1866/67 on the mission school in Leipzig. In 1872 he completed his studies at Leipzig University graduating with a doctorate degree. His doctorate, he published in 1873 under the title Studies on the comparative grammar of the Finnish language base. Then he went back to Estonia and worked as a journalist for newspapers and newspaper Eesti New Dörptsche Põllumees.

From 1874 to 1887 Mihkel Veske was a lecturer in Estonian language at the University of Tartu and taught from 1878 to 1881 at the Russian-speaking Estonian Tartu Teachers' Training College. From 1886 until his untimely death in 1890 was Veske lecturer in Finno-Ugric languages ​​at Kazan University.

During the 1880s Mihkel Veske was one of the leading representatives of the National awakening of Estonians. He belonged to the strongly nationalist groups to the Estonian intellectuals and publicists Carl Robert Jakobson. From 1882 to 1886 was president of the Estonian literary Veske Association ( Eesti Kirjameeste Selts ). In 1884, the magazine Veske Oma Maa ( Our own country).

Mihkel Veske was one of the first Estonian linguists that the comparative- historical method of linguistics helped themselves. Between 1875 and 1884 he went in the summer to travel, to compare the dialects. In 1880 he stayed in Finland, 1885/86 in Hungary. He advocated an Estonian standard language based on the North Estonian dialect and phonetic spelling. During his time in Kazan he studied the languages ​​of Mari and the Mordvins and dealt with the cultural relations between the Finno -Ugric and Slavic peoples. 1881-83 he created a textbook of the Finnish language in two volumes.

Mihkel Veske was transferred after his death in the home. He is on the Uus -Jaani cemetery of Tartu buried. The bronze bust on his grave stone came from the Estonian sculptor August Weizenberg (now lost).

Poet

Mihkel Veske came as a poet in appearance. His poetry is based on the simplicity of the popular Estonian Regilaul. In addition, he collected folk poetry and folk songs. He transferred many German, Russian, Finnish and Hungarian folk songs into Estonian.
