Paistu Parish

Paistu ( German Paistel ) is a rural municipality in Estonia Viljandi County with an area of 129 km ². It has 1601 inhabitants ( 2009). Paistu is 13 km from Viljandi away.

In addition to the main town Paistu the country parish includes the villages Aidu, Hendrikumõisa, Holstre, Intsu, Kassi, Lolu, Loodi, Luiga, Mustapali, Paistu, Pirmastu, Pulleritsu, Sultsi, Tömbi and Viisuküla.

Paistu was first mentioned in documents in 1234. The outbreak of the plague in 1710 fell almost the entire population of the victim. Only in the middle of the 19th Century began with a more effective agriculture a recovery.

Today, a large part of the municipality is part of the Natural Park Loodi. The pristine forests and lakes are interesting in the summer for hiking tourists and in winter for cross-country skiers.
