Mike Morwood

Michael " Mike" Morwood ( born October 27, 1950 in Auckland, New Zealand, † July 23, 2013 in Darwin, Australia ) was an archaeologist and professor at the School of Human and Environmental Studies, University of New England in Armidale, New South Wales. 2003 Morwood discovered the first discoveries of Homo floresiensis.

Life

Morwood studied archeology at the University of Auckland in New Zealand and received his doctorate in 1980 at the Australian National University. Since 1981, he lectured at the University of New England in Armidale.

In 2003 he discovered during excavations on the Indonesian island of Flores, a hitherto unknown member of the genus Homo, Homo floresiensis, or jokingly called " Hobbit ". He also directed the excavations in the Soa Basin.

From 1992 to 2000 he was president of the Australian Rock Art Research Association ( AURA), the protection and study of rock art is dedicated to.

Morwood died in July 2013 at the age of 62 years from the effects of cancer.
