Life

Britnew Kronstadt came from a merchant family and was himself an entrepreneur since 1840. So, for example, built several floating cranes for unloading ships. In 1862 he initiated a regular steamship service between Kronstadt and Oranienbaum. In order to operate that service, even in winter, he left in 1864 to him belonging iron tugboat pilot ( " Пайлот "), converted to a first successful icebreaker of modern design. This led to keen interest in some of the Baltic Sea States, but there was initially no direct imitators. In 1871 he sold the drawings of the pilot to Germany, which was the impetus for the construction of such vessels in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, the USA and Canada.

In 1868 he was elected mayor of Kronstadt. In the same year he founded his shipyard in Kronstadt, with its own foundry. There built ships sailed a long time on the Yenisei and Lena rivers sibierischen and on Lake Baikal.
