Mikkeli Province

The Mikkeli Province (Finnish Mikkelin lääni, schwed. S: t Michel län) is a former province in Finland. It existed until 1997 and had Mikkeli as its capital. The Mikkeli province was largely congruent with the present landscape of Southern Savo, in addition, it included the now belonging to Päijät -Häme Hartola communities, Heinola and Sysmä and the community Kangaslampi that came through their incorporation in Varkaus 2005 Northern Savo.

The Mikkeli province was founded in 1831. Mikkeli in 1847 was determined to be their capital, Heinola previously had held this function. 1960, a part of the province of Mikkeli was allocated to the newly established province of Central Finland. Through the provincial reform of 1997, the province of Mikkeli ( excluding the municipalities Hartola, Heinola and Sysmä ) was merged together with the provinces of Kuopio and North Karelia to the new province of Eastern Finland.
