Mikkjel Fønhus

Mikkjel Fønhus (actually Mikkel Arnesen Fønhus, born March 14, 1894 in Sør- Aurdal, † October 28, 1973 ) was a Norwegian writer.

Life

Fønhus was the son of Arne Mikkelsen Fønhus and his wife Olava Olsdatter Storsveen. The parents operated a retail business. 1896 died Arne Fønhus, so that his wife and his younger brother Mikkel raised them alone. His high school put Mikkel Fønhus 1913 from a private school in Christiania. Short term Fønhus worked as a journalist

His study of law, he broke off early and returned to his hometown. There he began to write short stories, which he first published in magazines. His debut novel Skoggangsmand appeared in 1917 and was highly praised by Johannes V. Jensen. By following the book Vildmarken suser (1919 ), which also appeared in German in 1928, and Det Skriker fra Kverrvilljuvet (1920 ) and Trollelgen (1921 ), he had his breakthrough. Trollelgen 1926 was also translated into German in 1927 and filmed. During the Nazi era over 400,000 copies of the book were printed in Germany. Fønhus himself traveled in 1937 to Germany, where he visited the Nordic Society and gave lectures.

Overall Fønhus published in 56 years, 41 books, which were regularly printed as first editions of 15,000 copies. He received several awards, including Mads Wiel Nygaards Legat, 1965 ( together with Einar Skjæraasen ) and Gyldendals Legat 1952 ( with Jakob Sande ). In 1963 he was awarded the Royal Medal of Merit in gold.

Fønhus died in 1973 on a hike near his hometown.

Work

Fønhus is known primarily as a nature poet. Much of his material comes from his home region of Valdres. Even as a young Fønhus had been an avid hunter and angler, so that he was well versed in the nature. Much time was spent in the forests of his homeland. However, some books also deal with experiences from his travels to Africa, Canada, and Spitsbergen. These include Lovene i Kilimatui, which also appeared in German language, as well Urskogene, Under Polarlys and Ontarioskogen. Fønhus ' language was also influenced by the local dialect.
