Valdres

Valdres is a landscape in central southern Norway, situated between Gudbrandsdal and Hallingdal. Valdres is located in the center of the province (county ) Oppland.

Location

Valdres covered the territory of the municipalities Nord-Aurdal, Sør- Aurdal Øystre Slidre, Vestre Slidre, Vang and Etnedal. The most important town in the area is Fagernes, where there is also an airport.

Valdres connects the eastern part of Norway ( Østlandet ) with mountains and the mountains of Jotunheimen. The most important rivers are the Begna and the Etna. The European route E 16 is adjacent to the RV 51, the main artery. The 109 km long Valdres ( Oslo ) Eina - Fagernes was decommissioned in 1988 for passenger traffic. A modest freight was still held to 1999

Major lakes are tyin, Bygdin and Vinstri.

Economy

Valdres has about 18,000 inhabitants. Historically, the region lives from agriculture and, increasingly, from tourism. Especially for hikers, the region offers an attractive offer. The forests of Begnadalen and Vassfaret, as well as the mountains of Jotunheimen pull through trails of all difficulty levels to travelers.
