Miklós Ybl

Ybl, ( German Nikolaus Ybl, born April 6, 1814 Székesfehérvár, † 22 January 1891 in Budapest) was a Hungarian architect and an important representative of European historicism. His most famous works include the Opera House in Budapest.

Life

Ybl studied at the Vienna Polytechnic.

From 1832 he worked in architect Mihály Pollack Office, 1836 Henrik Koch. At the beginning of the 1840s he undertook study trips to Munich and Italy.

His first job he carried out with Ágost Pollack, the son of Mihály Pollack. It was the Ikervár Lajos Batthyány Castle.

The early style Ybls can be described as romantic with Romanesque elements. His later work is more likely to belong to the Neo-Renaissance.

A big disappointment in his life was that while he participated in the founding of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, but was not elected a member.

His grave is located on the Kerepesi temető in Budapest.
