Miles Joseph Berkeley

Miles Joseph Berkeley ( born April 1, 1803 in Biggin Hall, Northamptonshire, England; † 30 July 1889 in Sibbertoft in Market Harborough, Northamptonshire ) was an English clergyman and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Berk. ".

Life and work

Berkeley studied theology at Rugby and at Christ 's College, Cambridge in 1825 and a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Cambridge. After that, he was curate in Apethorpe, 1833 in Wood Newton and from 1868 in Sibbertontoft. In 1857, Berkeley was chosen as a member of the Scholars Academy Leopoldina.

In addition to his spiritual activities, he was a zoologist and botanist and conducted research mainly in the field of mycology. He has gained about the biology and ecology of fungi especially merits and has the terminology of Mycology significantly affected. He also explored the fungal flora not only from England and continental Europe but also the non-European territories. The term " fungology " goes back to him.

In his article series " Decades of fungi " (1844-1856) fungi are presented from different parts of the world and described many new species.
