Mingtan Dam

The Mingtan Dam ( Chinese:明潭 坝, Míngtán Ba ) dammed the river Shuili Xi [note 1] 4 km to below its outflow from the Sun Moon Lake in central Taiwan to Minghu reservoir. The shut-off is 61.5 m (other indication: 82 m) high and was completed in 1990. The pent-up reservoir is the lower basin of the Minghu pumped storage power plant.

With strong demand for electricity water is discharged to generate electricity from the Sun Moon Lake and flows into the Minghu reservoir, while in low demand, water is pumped back. The rated power of the power plant is 1600 MW with six turbines / generators, each with 266 MW.

When Jiji Earthquake of 1999 [ Note 2] with a magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter scale ( according to the alternative magnitude scale 7.6 ) Mingtan was a sustained barrage of at least eight buildings, the damage, but they did not collapse.
