Minister of the Interior (France)

The Ministry of Interior of France ( officially French Ministère de l' intérieur, de l' outre- mer, the collectivités territorial et de l'immigration, in German: Ministry of the Interior, Overseas ( territories ), local authorities and immigration) is a of the most important cabinet portfolios in the French government. The Ministry has its headquarters at the Hôtel de Beauvau VIII arrondissement of Paris, next to the Elysee Palace. Current minister since April 2, 2014 Bernard Cazeneuve (PS).

The Ministry of Interior is responsible for general internal security of the country, in terms of law and order, and natural disasters, for the police forces, namely the Police National Gendarmerie and the National Police for domestic tasks, the civil defense, the fire service. It has the responsibility for the issuance of identity documents such as passport, identity card, driving license etc. in the prefectures, arrangements for cooperation between regional governments and the central government and the holding of elections. The Department has authority over the prefect in the department. It is also responsible for religious affairs, especially in relation to the Catholic Church.

Affiliated to the Ministry of Interior are the responsibilities for the Overseas Territories and other overseas possessions ( Ministère de l' Outre- mer et des collectivités territorial ).
