Ministry of Education (New Zealand)

The Ministry of Education ( Māori: Te o te Mātauranga Tāhuhu ) is the Government department responsible for the education system in New Zealand and the supreme authority in this area. It has its headquarters in Wellington. The responsibility for the Ministry Hekia Parata share booth 2013 as Minister of Education and Steven Joyce as Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment, both from the National Party.

History

The Ministry was established with the Education Act 1989 on 1 October 1989. It was created when the Department of Education, was split in addition to the Ministry of Education in six other so-called Education Agencies, the:

  • Careers New Zealand
  • Education Review Office ( ERO)
  • Ministry of Education - Te Te Mātauranga o Tāhuhu
  • National Library of New Zealand - Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa
  • New Zealand Qualifications Authority - Mana Tohu Mātauranga o Aotearoa ( NZQA )
  • New Zealand Teachers Council - Te Pouherenga Kaiako o Aotearoa
  • Tertiary Education Commission - Te Mātauranga Matua Amorangi

As part of the reforms, based on the regions of Boards of Education, school administrators were called by individual escrow administration, Board of Trustees, replaced all primary and secondary schools.

Role of the Ministry

The role of the Ministry is to raise the level of education and to reduce the inequality in educational attainment. It occurs even not as an operator of educational institutions or providers of educational services. This role is fulfilled by elected boards of trustees in each school in the state education sector. The functions of the Ministry include advising the government information services for the education sector, provision of learning resources, legal regulation of education and its financing and provision of specialist. The ministry is working with other agencies to together (see above ) and the Learning Media Limited.

Publications

The Ministry is, among other things out the magazine published 14 - day New Zealand Education Gazette, on the one hand inform the education sector over ministerial initiatives in education and on the other hand, reports on practical implementation in schools, nurseries and kindergartens.
