Ministry of National Defence (Lithuania)

The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense ( Lithuanian: Lietuvos Respublikos Krasto apsaugos ministerija literally: ' field fuse Ministry of the Republic of Lithuania ') is one of the 14 ministries of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania. The Ministry is located in the Old Town of Vilnius.

Organization

Supreme Commander is the President of the Republic of Lithuania, which can directly order the mobilization, the case of defense or a state of emergency in the event of a crisis. The Parliament, the Seimas, has to accept the decrees of the President, if necessary, and shall exercise parliamentary control over the armed forces. The Ministry of Defence is the highest command authority of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. Defence Minister Juozas is Olekas - subordinate to this right is the military commander of the armed forces, currently Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius.

History

On March 23, 1990, the Lithuanian Parliament ( lit. Lietuvos Respublikos Aukščiausioji Taryba ) was planning to found an institution for the defense of the state, while proposing the candidatures for the Minister of the Lithuanian Government. The candidate was the deputy Vidmantas Povilionis.

On 25 April 1990, the Lithuanian government established the Department of national defense ( lit. Krasto apsaugos departamentas ). On October 10, 1991, the Parliament appointed the Lithuanian Defense Minister Audrius Butkevičius country.

On October 16, 1991, the Department of national defense was disbanded after it had done its job. A new unit ( structure) for the defense was only on 3 February 1992 by the Lithuanian Minister of Defence confirmed ( by Decision No. 49 ), although the officials for national defense were already selected and had entered service. In November 1999, the legal department of the new ministry was established.

On November 10, 2000 Linas Linkevičius was appointed minister of defense ( deputy ministers were Jonas Gecas, Povilas Malakauskas and Valdemaras Sarapinas appointed ).

In January 2001, a reorganization was carried out. At that time, the Departments of Public Relations and NATO emerged. The administrative department, the department of International Relations, resources and programs, defense policy and planning have been restructured.
