Minnie Pwerle

Minnie Pwerle ( * 1920, Utopia, 200km north east of Alice Springs; † 18 March 2006) was an Australian Aboriginal artist from the tribe of the Anmatyerre and Alyawarre.

Life

She was one of eight and mother of seven children, whom she cared for and where they taught the traditions of the Aborigines. One of her daughters, Barbara Weir, also became an artist.

Work

Since the 1980s, she worked with batiks and moved at the age of almost 80 years in 1999 for the painting on canvas with acrylic paints. She painted with traditional patterns dreamtime stories of her people, the so-called Awelye Atnwengerrp Dreamings (woman ceremonies ); Other topics were bush melon and orange bush. One of her works was awarded the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award in 2001. Thus her special way was to paint acknowledged.

Her images have been exhibited in numerous museums and exhibitions in Australia. Collections of it there is in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Art Gallery of South Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and the Queensland Art Gallery.
