Miraflores District, Lima

Miraflores is one of the 43 districts of Lima in Peru. Is home to around 93,000 inhabitants on its 9.62 km ². Miraflores is considered along with San Isidro as one of the wealthiest neighborhoods of Lima.

Geography

Location

Miraflores covers 9.62 km ² and is on average 79 meters above sea level. It is one of 43 districts of Lima Metropolitana region. Miraflores is bordered to the north by San Isidro, on the northeast by surquillo, in the southeast of Santiago de Surco, and on the south by Barranco. In the west the coast lies to the Pacific.

Climate

In Miraflores has a temperate, maritime climate. The average annual temperature is 18.2 degrees Celsius and the annual rainfall is only 9 millimeters. August is the coldest month with an average of 15.1 degrees Celsius, February is the warmest month with 22.3 degrees the average temperature.

History

On January 2, 1857 Miraflores officially became a city district of Lima.

On January 15, 1881, the so-called Battle of Miraflores took place in saltpeter. On this day the Peruvian units were pushed back by the Chilean army in Miraflores with losses of around 2000 people. In memory of this battle is called Miraflores today Ciudad Heroica - City of Heroes. Nevertheless, fell one day after the Battle of Miraflores, the capital Lima.

Even in 1887, had Miraflores after reports of Paz Soldan no more than about 100 inhabitants, a count from that time estimated the population to 636 people. Today Miraflores counts compared with around 93,000 inhabitants.

Policy

The acting mayor of the municipality is called Manuel Masias (2007-2010).

Economy and infrastructure

Education

Due to the prosperity of the district are some of the namenhaftestesen schools in Miraflores, the Markham College, the German School Alexander von Humboldt, the Pestalozzi School and the Carmelite School.

Culture

Miraflores is a wealthy municipality and therefore has many cultural centers, theaters, cinemas and art museums.

The only pre-Hispanic buildings in Miraflores is the Huaca Pucllana, a temple dating from before the Incas.

In Miraflores, the most international hotels have set up, such as the Hilton or the Ritz.

Huaca Pucllana

The only pre-Hispanic buildings in Miraflores is the Huaca Pucllana. The temple complex dating from the 6th century AD comprises about 15 acres. It is restored since 1983.

Parque Kennedy

The Parque Kennedy is the old center of Miraflores. Is the old church Virgen Milagrosa and the town hall at its limit. In the park, there are many street artists and street traders.

Centro Comercial Larcomar

The Centro Comercial Larcomar is a large shopping center with a multiplex cinema. It is located on one of the most picturesque spots in Miraflores. Directly behind the shopping center are the famous Torres y Telmex Marriott.

Costa Verde

The Costa Verde is a stretch of coastline with a number of sand and gravel beaches, which lies partly in Miraflores. From the cliffs you can practice paragliding and the water is good for surfing.

In particular, the surfing has a long tradition in Miraflores. In the 1930s, Carlos Dogny from a visit to Hawaii brought the first surfboard and founded in the wake of the famous Waikiki Surf Club on the beach in Miraflores.
