Miramar, Havana

Miramar is a neighborhood of Havana. Verwaltungspoltisch Miramar belongs to the municipality ( municipality ) Playa. In the first half of the 20th century to the Quinta Avenida ( 5th Street ) developed here an expensive residential area with many parks, many villa-like private residences and social meeting places for the upper class, such as dated as from the 1920 Miramar Yacht Club or the Country Club. The buildings were mostly kept in a historicist eclectic style. The Quinta Avenida was considered the most beautiful street of Havana. After the Cuban Revolution, most residents of Miramar emigrated to the United States. As a result, it came from 1959 to decay tendencies of the building fabric, then many of the houses were taken over and revitalized by business enterprises. Today, even the diplomatic district of the Cuban capital is located.

Through the tunnel under the estuary of the Río Almendares the Quinta Avenida became the western continuation of the Malecón, which fueled the real estate boom of the 1950s in this zone. It also monumental church buildings were built, such as those of Jesús de Miramar, hotels, casinos and artificial beaches. One of the currently dominant building is the Embassy of the Russian Federation, formerly that of the Soviet Union.
