Miramichi, New Brunswick

Miramichi is a city in the Canadian province of New Brunswick. It was founded on 1 January 1995 on the initiative of the then province of Prime Minister Frank McKenna. The name was chosen because of its exposed position on the Miramichi River. The new city is an amalgamation of Small Towns Chatham, Newcastle, Douglas Town, Logie Ville, Nelson and some smaller communities. The Centenial ( Miramichi ) Bridge over the Miramichi River connects the northern and southern part of the city.

Geography

Miramichi is located in Northumberland on the Miramichi River, just before its extension to Miramichi Bay and about 35 kilometers before its confluence with the St. Lawrence Gulf.

History

The territory of the present town of Miramichi been inhabited for hundreds of years by the Mi'kmaqindianern. In the colonization of America by the Acadians, this region was part of the French colony of Acadia. After 1754, the British took over the area as a result of the Seven Years' War in North America. In the following period people in particular from Ireland and Scotland immigrated increased. Thereafter, the aforementioned towns developed independently until the merger in 1995.

Tourism and Festivals

Because of the location on the Miramichi River and vast areas of forest around the area is a popular area for fishing and hunting, and is also opened up for tourism. Also contribute to a large number of festivals that are held annually. Foremost among these are:
