The Miramichi River (French Rivière Miramichi ) is a river in east -central part of the Canadian province of New Brunswick. The river has a length of 217 km and a catchment area of 12,390 km ². The river empties into the Miramichi Inner Bay of St. Lawrence Gulf. The name comes from the Montagnais words " Maissimeu Assi " ( meaning " Mi'kmaq Land" ).
Geography
The Miramichi River drains about one quarter of the province of New Brunswick area with 12,390 km ². 300 km ² comprises the estuary and the inner part of Miramichi Bay. The catchment area is approximately equal to the Northumberland County and parts of Victoria County, Carleton County and York County, and smaller parts of Gloucester County and Sunbury County.
The Miramichi River headwaters measures including 217 km. He has two major headwaters, the Southwest Miramichi River and the Northwest Miramichi River.
