Mircea Tiberian

Mircea Tiberian ( born May 4, 1955 in Cluj- Napoca, Cluj County ) is a Romanian jazz pianist.

Life and work

Tiberian grew up in Sibiu in 1975 and came to Bucharest, where he studied at the Conservatory until 1980. He made his debut in 1974 at the International Jazz Festival in Sibiu. From 1979 to 1981 he was a member of Teatrul Muzical Ion Vasilescu in Bucharest. From 1984, he led, together with Liviu Butoi a quartet, he was also Cole core of the trio Labirint and the Romanian All Stars. With Dan Mandrila and Nicolas Simion he played in the group Opus 4

Between 1990 and 1993 he was a member of the Romanian Big Band. In 1998 he founded with Maurice de Martin the East-West European Jazz Orchestra Interzone. Since the mid- 1990s, he took part in several multimedia projects: Incursiuni (1996 ), Liniada (1999) and Agnus Dei ( 2000). He collaborated with European and American musicians such as Larry Coryell, Tomasz Stanko, Herb Robertson, Ed Schuller, Nicolas Simion, Adam Pieronczyk, Theo Jörgensmann, Johnny Răducanu, Aura Urziceanu and Anca Parghel.

Tiberian taught jazz at the music academies of Bucharest and Cluj- Napoca and is the artistic director of the International Jazz Festival in Bucharest.
