Mirebeau

Mirebeau is a commune with 2163 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Vienne in the Poitou -Charentes; it belongs to the district of Poitiers and the Canton Mirebeau.

History

Count Fulk of Anjou conquered Nerra Mirebeau and had built a castle here. His son Geoffroy II held here after his victory in the Battle of Moncontour ( 1033 ) the defeated Duke William VI. of Aquitaine five years fixed. Since then until the revolution belonged to Mirebeau Anjou.

Mid- July 1202 Eleanor of Aquitaine was besieged by the French army in Mirebeau. Only the arrival of her son, the King of England John Lackland, on 1 August she rescued.

In the 14th century Mirebeau was raised to the barony, were among the 114 fiefdom. 1789 were separated from the Sénéchaussée de Saumur and assigned to the new department of Vienne Mirebeau and Moncontour.
