Mirko Bogović

Mirko Bogović ( born February 2, 1816 in Varaždin, † May 4, 1893 in Zagreb) was a Croatian poet and politician.

He attended military school in Petrovaradin and studied in Szombathely and Zagreb. He worked as a lawyer, as well as a writer and politically active.

He gave the magazine Neven ( Marigold ) out; because of a poem by Ivan Filipović printed there, he was sentenced together with this to two years in prison. Later he held several political positions, including serving as the county Župan Zágráb and deputy in the Sabor.

His poems dealt with politics, patriotism and love.

During the Bach absolutism he was one of the most important literary figures in Croatia. He is also one of the drafters of the amendment Croatian Pripovijesti and also he was a playwright with a socio-political tendency. In the works Francopan and Stjepan, posljednji kralj bosanski it illuminates critical Croatian society.
