Miroľa

Miroľa (Hungarian Mérfalva - to 1902 Mirolya ) is a municipality in the district Svidník in the north-east Slovakia.

The small community Miroľa, about six kilometers from the border with Poland, is located in the area between the mountain ranges Ondavská Highlands ( Ondauer Bergland ) and Laborecká Highlands ( Labortzer Bergland ), both parts of the eastern Low Beskids. Near the source of a tributary of the Chotčianka located, which flows into Stropkov in the upper Ondava, the village is located just below a pass that leads to the north in the Valley of the Ladomirka and Duklapass. The highest elevation in the immediate vicinity of the village is the Lesky with 660 meters above the sea.

The running in the north -south main road through Miroľa leads from Bodružal a 400 m high pass and follows the river valley to the south by Pstriná and Staskovce. The cities Svidník and Stropkov are removed every 20 kilometers from Miroľa.

1572, the village was first mentioned in a document. After a brief Greek - Catholic Church, especially the wooden church of the protection of Our Lady is worth seeing. The iconostasis of the Orthodox Church built in 1770 is designed according to precise iconographic principles. Among the iconic folk motifs include scenes with shepherds and women in traditional costumes.

The population declined in recent years (1991: 119 inhabitants; 2001: 85 inhabitants). The population Miroľas consists of 78% of Slovaks, 20 % of residents are Russian women. 51 % of residents gave as a confession of Greek Catholic, about 47 % profess the Orthodox Church.
