Miroslav Gospel

The Miroslav Gospel (Serbian Мирослављево Јеванђеље / Miroslavljevo Jevanđelje ) is a 362 -page liturgical book of parchment, which was created in the second half of the 12th century. It is among the oldest surviving illustrated manuscripts in the Cyrillic alphabet, which are influenced in style and iconography by a mixture of Italian and Byzantine influences.

It was commissioned by the Serbian Župan of Zahumlje Miroslav, brother of Stefan Nemanja, probably in Kotor around 1186 for the needs of the church of St. Peter on Lim in Bijelo Polje, a foundation Miroslavs.

To protect against Ottoman raids, the Miroslav Gospel was kept in Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos, until it was taken during a visit by Serbian King Alexander I Obrenović in 1896 to Belgrade and added to the collection of the Serbian National Museum.

Since 2005, it is on the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage list.
