Moddi

Moddi (born 18 February 1987 in Tromsø), Pål Moddi Knutsen real name, is a Norwegian singer-songwriter.

History

Pål Moddi Knutsen grew up on the island of Senja in northern Norway. His whole family is very musical. Mother, father, grandmother, aunts and uncles played various musical instruments. Trine Knutsen, his aunt is a famous flutist in Norway. At the age of five years Moddi had his first broadcast appearance with a shanty. As a teenager, he played piano and trumpet in a school band, bass guitar in a rock band and tried beyond as a rapper. With 15 Moddi began to write his own songs.

At the age of 18 he found in the basement of the family house, the old, for years unused accordion and his mother barely two weeks later, he was the first own concert. Soon after, the first songs were recorded in makeshift bedroom studio of a friend. Although there were only twenty of these demos, they found their way into the radio stations. The appearance at the festival "Rock mot Rus ' in Andenes in 2006, which attracted the interest of local media attention, marked the beginning of his activities as a singer and songwriter in Norway. Appearances on the Scandinavian music convention and festival " by: Larm " and " Øyafestivalen " in 2008 brought the young artist attention and praise in the international music media.

Musical career

In August 2008, the debut EP " rubato " was released on the label Playground Music. This split EP was recorded with his band mates and Norwegian singer-songwriter Einar Stray Moddi. Shortly thereafter Moddi moved to Oslo to work on a new album. Parallel to his musical career, he studied Culture and Communication at the University of Oslo.

2010 the debut album " Floriography ", which was released on the label " Impeller Records ". For the recording of the longplayer Moddi and his band went in September 2009 for two weeks to Reykjavík for producers Valgeir Sigurdsson, who is primarily known for his studio work with Björk. Without hit on the radio, the album made ​​the jump to rank 9 and remained in the Norwegian charts for 4 weeks. In the same year Moddi received a prestigious dated the equivalent of 125,000 euro grant, which was awarded by the Norwegian pop-rock band a-ha. This serves to promote and support Nachwuchmusikern. 2011 was followed by a nomination for the Norwegian Grammy, Spellemannprisen, in two categories: " Best Artist " and " Newcomer of the Year ".

His first concerts in Germany were Moddi in May 2010 and joined later on as part of the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg. In November and December were Moddi and his band in the opening act of the Australian Group Angus & Julia Stone to see on their European tour and spent a total of 27 concerts in Germany, England, France, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Belgium.

Musical Style

Moddi moves between folk and singer-songwriter style with pop elements, mainly accompanied by accordion, acoustic guitar, piano and strings. His songs with their poetic lyrics, sung in " times fragile, sometimes energiegeladenem and haunting vocals ," oscillate between " brittle folk aesthetics and chamber music arrangements ." The press compared him with Sigur Rós, Nick Drake, the young Björk and Soap & Skin.
