Moderna Museet

The Moderna Museet, Museum of Modern Art, is a state museum on the island of Skeppsholmen in Stockholm for Swedish, Nordic and international modern art and contemporary art. It was opened in 1958 and houses collections of modern paintings, sculptures and photographs.

Organization

The Moderna Museet heard as the National Museum and the Museum of East Asian to state authority Statens konstmuseer (German State Art Museum ). The museum is affiliated also the Arkitekturmuseet ( Museum of Architecture ).

Art theft

1993 six paintings by Pablo Picasso and two paintings by Georges Braque worth an estimated 60 million euros were stolen, of which three Picasso's works were rediscovered.

Reopening 1998

In 1994, the fundus of the museum was outsourced to construct a new building in the meantime. The new museum was designed by Spanish architect Rafael Moneo and inaugurated in 1998. Because of mold damage, the museum was swapped again, but returned in February 2004 after the renovation back in the old rooms back.

In December 2009, a branch museum was opened in Malmö, the Moderna Museet Malmö.
