Daniel Birnbaum

Daniel Birnbaum (* July 10, 1963 in Stockholm) is a Swedish art historian and curator. From 2000 to 2010 he was Rector of the State University of Fine Arts ( Städel school) in Frankfurt am Main, November 1, 2010, Birnbaum Director of the Moderna Museet in Stockholm.

Life and work

Daniel Birnbaum studied art history, philosophy and literature at Stockholm University, the Freie Universität Berlin and Columbia University in New York. From 1989 to 1997 he was art critic for the Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter and Expressen, and worked as an editor and freelance curator. From 1996 to 1998 he worked as a lecturer in art theory at the University College of Art, Craft and Design in Stockholm. 1998 Daniel Birnbaum received his doctorate at the Faculty of Philosophy, Stockholm University with a dissertation on Edmund Husserl.

After receiving his doctorate Birnbaum took over the management of the Swedish International Artists Studio Program in Stockholm ( IASPIS ) to 2000. He is the author of numerous articles in international art magazines such as Parkett, Artforum and Frieze. In addition, Birnbaum engaged in scientific work and translations with Novalis, Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, Gottlob Frege, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Jacques Derrida and Thomas Bernhard.

In 2000, Birnbaum Rector and successor of Kasper König at the Frankfurt Städel school. He is also the director of the portico, a prestigious exhibition hall, which was opened in 2006 after a conversion into new premises at the Frankfurt Main island. Birnbaum gives his Leitungsposititionen at the beginning of the winter semester 2010/2011, but remains a professor of school. His successor, the architect, curator and art theorist Nikolaus Hirsch was elected by the Convention. Birnbaum was 1 November 2010 Director of the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Swedish National Museum of Modern Art (successor of Lars Nittve ).

Birnbaum has been involved in various biennials, including 2002., As a member of the International Committee of the Manifesta Foundation, as co- curator of the Italian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale and in 2005 as a co- curator of the 1st Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art Also in 2005, he was curator of Uncertain States of America in collaboration with Hans -Ulrich Obrist. He ran in 2009, with the co-director Jochen Volz the 53rd Venice Biennale. Birnbaum 's artistic advisor of the Vienna museum in progress.

According to a study by the trade magazine Art Review, 2009, Birnbaum is fourth in the list of 100 most influential people in the industry.

Birnbaum lives in Stockholm.
