Moffen

Moffen is a small island in the north of belonging to Norway Svalbard Islands. The flat island is about 3 km long, up to 2 km wide and 5 km ². It is located approximately at the 80th degree of north latitude in the output of Wijdefjords, a few kilometers north of the island of Spitsbergen, the largest island of the archipelago.

The island was discovered in the mid -17th century by Dutch whalers and seal and possibly after the Netherlands usual, but pejorative term for German, Mof, named. The island today represents a significant habitat for walruses, who reside in their hundreds on the flat island. It will therefore be controlled regularly by cruise ships, but may not be entered. On Moffen breed eiders, Arctic terns, brent geese and gulls swallow. The island is a nature reserve ( Moffen naturreservat ) within the Nordvest - Spitsbergen National Park and there it represents the easternmost land mass
