Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf (Persian محمدباقر قالیباف; born September 2, 1961 in the vicinity of the Iranian city of Mashhad ) is currently the Mayor of Tehran.

Training

At the age of 22 he was appointed during the First Gulf War of Mohsen Rezai appointed commander of the Nasr division of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, later transferred to the Air Force Department. In 1996, he completed a post-graduate studies with a Master of Arts degree in political geography from. There followed in 2001 a doctorate in the same field of science at the Tarbiat Modares University.

Political career

Due to the Iranian leader Ali Khamenei Ghalibaf was appointed successor of General Hedayat Lotfian after the student riots in July 1999, chief of police. He led the project " Police 110 " in order to make the ordering power more accessible to the public. He succeeded also, along with his deputy Morteza Talaei to cope with the student protests in 2003 without bloodshed. On behalf of the Iranian president Mohammad Khatami, he was also its representative on the Committee for the reduction of car traffic. On April 5, 2005 Ghalibaf applied successfully for the withdrawal of all military posts at Ali Khamenei.

In the Iranian presidential election in 2005 Ghalibaf participated with support of influential groups of the conservative alliance. This supported him, probably because of its popularity. However, shortly before the election this alliance waved to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who won the elections. Although Ali Khamenei explicitly stated that due to the secrecy of voting, no one could know his vote, it is assumed that Ghalibaf was supported by this first.

In the elections on 5 September 2005 Ghalibaf was elected the 57th Mayor of Tehran and was the successor of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in this office. He received 8 of 15 of the elected Council votes. After growing domestic difficulties of Ahmadinejad, re-engaging Ghalibaf on the 2009 presidential election was expected by observers, however, did not occur. In the presidential election in 2013 Ghalibaf stepped in again.

Involvement in human rights violations

After 2010, however, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the International Neuroscience Institute (INI ) by Professor Madjid Samii the city of Hanover visited and enlisted there in the Golden Book of the city, there were protests by the National Council of Resistance of Iran. Based on information from the Iranian Human Rights Documentation Centre, after which Ghalibaf even taking part in the crackdown on student protests in July 1999, accused in a recorded through speech, calls for the organization of the pan-European ban on entry of Ghalibaf and the freezing of his any accounts in Europe.
