Majid Samii

Madjid Samii (Persian مجید سمیعی; born June 19, 1937 in Rasht / Iran ) is a German -Iranian neurosurgeon.

Life

Career

Samii studied medicine from 1957 to 1963 at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. This study was fully funded by an Iranian funding. In the years 1958 to 1962 he also studied at the University of Mainz in parallel as a second study zoology and botany. He completed his studies with medical state examination in 1963, In 1964 he received his doctorate.

From 1965 Samii was a research assistant at the Department of Neurosurgery University Hospital of Mainz and received the recognition in 1970 as a specialist in neurosurgery. There followed appointments for the first senior physician and deputy director of the clinic. That same year saw his Habilitation in neurosurgery. Also In 1970, Samii a school for microsurgery, in which he taught his 1967 developed microscopic surgical procedures. 1971 appointed to Samii adjunct professor. 1974 saw the appointment Samiis the Scientific Council and a professor at a university.

In 1977 he became director of the Department of Neurosurgery in the North City Hospital in Hanover. In 1986, he took over the chair of neurosurgery at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands, 1988, at the Hannover Medical School ( MHH). Since 2003 he has directed the he founded International Neuroscience Institute in Hanover, a research institute and clinic for neurosurgery.

It combines a friendship with the former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder ( SPD), who accompanied him to the founding of the Samii Foundation.

Services

Samii has developed in the 1960s imaging techniques, with the aid of operations could be made much safer on the brain. He was the first surgical microscopes introduced in neurosurgery in 1967 in Germany, whereby operations of nerves and vessels in the brain were gewebsschonender possible.

In the 1970s and 1980s, he explored the syringomyelia and other diseases of the spinal cord.

To date, he has enabled many previously totally deaf patients through the use of a device connected to the nerve cells in the brain stem microchips listening again. Currently Samii researching surgical procedures for curing paraplegics.

In collaboration with Peter- Michael Zink 1992, he developed the zinc - Samii screw for spine.

Samii is married and father of two children.

International Neuroscience Institute (INI )
