The Mojarras ( Gerreidae ) are a family of related bass fish which occur mainly in tropical and subtropical seas, with over 50 species. Many species are also found in brackish water, some swim up rivers. Eugerres mexicanus lives in southern Mexico and northern Guatemala, only in freshwater. The Mojarras may be related closely with the wrasses ( Labridae ).

Features

Mojarras are small to medium-sized silvery fish with a spitzschnäuzigen, very far vorstülpbaren ( protactilen ) mouth, which feed on bottom-dwelling invertebrates. You can reach depending on the type, length of 6.5 centimeters to half a meter. Her head is almost entirely with scales, the upper surface is smooth, however. The bases of dorsal and anal fins are scaly and form high shed sheaths, in which the fins can be covered. The scales are usually cycloid. The dorsal fin is supported by nine to ten hard and 9-17 soft rays. The caudal fin is deeply divided. Above the pelvic fins is a small Axillarfortsatz. Mojarras have 24 vertebrae.
