Mokohinau Islands

The Mokohinau Islands are a small archipelago off the northeast coast of the North Island of New Zealand.

The islands are located 21 km north-west of Great Barrier Iceland and about 52 km east of Bream Head. Most are managed by the Department of Conservation as nature reserves and may be entered only with permission.

Large parts of Burgess Iceland, however, were reported by the Department of Conservation as a Country Park, which permits use for recreational purposes. The rest of the island is Crown land and is managed by the Ministry of Transport.

On Burgess Iceland stands since 1883 Mokohinau Islands Lighthouse, one of the lighthouses of New Zealand with the largest distance to the main islands. Since 1980, the lighthouse is fully automated.

The main island group is next to Burgess Iceland of numerous small islands, of which the larger Atihau Iceland and Iceland are Hokoromea. About 6 km south-east the island beacon Iceland, 7 km west lies the small Groper Iceland.
