MolÄ—tai

Molėtai ( German, 18th Century: Mulau ) is a town with 6,900 inhabitants, and the seat of the homonymous Rajongemeinde in Utena district in the east of Lithuania. The area of ​​the town is 3.77 km ². It forms in the community by a specific urban district office ( miesto seniūnija ).

Location

Molėtai located 30 km south of Utena, 63 km north of the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, on the highway Vilnius - Utena at the Siesartis.

History

The first documentary mention of the place told by the deed in 1387 that issued the Polish King and Lithuanian Grand Duke Jogaila the church servants of Vilnius for the area around Molėtai. In the 19th century numerous merchants and craftsmen settled, which led to a rapid growth.
