Geography and Hydrology

With a length of 11 km and a maximum width of 1.5 km of Mondsee covers an area of about 14 km ². The main tributaries are the coming from Lake Fuschl Fuschler Ache ( catchment area 117.6 km ²), of the Mondsee coming Zeller Ache ( 38.3 km ² ), and the Wangauer Ache ( 35.3 km ²). These three tributaries are responsible for more than 70 % of the water load in the Mondsee. About the only 3 km long Seeache leaving the Mondsee at its eastern end, it drains into the approximately 12 m deeper Attersee. The mean discharge ( MQ ) is 9.3 m³ / s, the (theoretical ) water renewal time 1.7 years.

Ecology

In the 1950s and 60s, the Mondsee was heavily affected by nutrients and it came to large blue-green algae blooms. This situation could be significantly improved by the construction of a ring channel management and treatment facilities in Thalgau and St. Lorenz, the lake is classified as oligotrophic to mesotrophic today. During heavy rain it can cause disproportionately high phosphorus and nitrogen inputs come from agricultural areas along the tributaries.

More than 80 % of the shoreline are installed or affected ecologically by internals. A longer -natural section is located in the mouth area of the Fuschler Ache, which is designated as a nature reserve.
