Mongolian legislative election, 2008

The Mongolian Parliament elections in 2008, when the deputies of the Great State Churals Mongolia were determined, was held on 29 June 2008. Turnout was first estimated to be around 74 percent.

Result

The election brought a victory of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party ( MPRP ) under its chairman and Mongolian Prime Minister Sandschaagiin Bajar. The opposition Democratic Party ( DP) fell well short of their expectations. Its chairman, Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj, spoke of electoral manipulation.

Riots

Following the announcement of preliminary results, there were demonstrations and violent clashes in the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator; Opposition supporters forced their way into the party building of the MPRP, the building caught fire. Five people were killed. The Mongolian President Nambaryn Enkhbayar imposed as a result a four-day state of emergency in the country.
