Monika Pyrek

Monika Pyrek ( born August 11, 1980 in Gdynia ) is a former Polish pole vaulter. 2005 and 2009, she was Vice World Champion.

Life

Pyrek won the silver medal at the Junior World Championships in 1998. In the adult area, it was in the same year at the European Championships seventh. The same placement she reached in her first Olympic participation at the Games in Sydney in 2000. Their first major success was winning the bronze medal at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton and fourth place at the 2003 World Championships in Paris / Saint- Denis. In both 2001 and 2003 she was elected athlete of the year in Poland.

At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens Pyrek were given opportunities to a bronze medal, but her Polish rival Anna Rogowska she answered on the fourth place. At the Golden League athletics meeting in Brussels on 3 September 2004 Pyrek set with 4.72 m on the Polish national record, which was later increased by Rogowska to 4.76 m and then on 22 July 2005 to 4.80 m.

At the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki Pyrek could turn the tables again and she won the silver medal with 4.60m against her compatriot Rogowska. Rogowska failed already at the height of 4.50 m. The performances of world champion Yelena Isinbayeva, however, were far away. Isinbayeva won the World Cup with a world record height of 5.01 m. At the European Championships 2006 in Gothenburg Pyrek won with 4.65 m again the silver medal behind Isinbayeva. In Osaka at the 2007 World Championships, she jumped 4.75 meters, a new personal best. With the same amount to silver and bronze she missed in fourth but because of the higher number of failed attempts a medal. Shortly thereafter, she threw herself into Stuttgart to 4.82 meters.

At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing Pyrek came in at number five. The following year she won at the World Championships in Berlin with a skipped height of 4.65 m, together with the US-American Chelsea Johnson the silver medal behind her compatriot Rogowska, who won gold with 4.75 m.

In 2011 she was at the World Championships in ten. At the European Championships 2012 in Helsinki and the Olympic Games in London in the same year did not come Pyrek each beyond the qualification. Early 2013, she ended her career.

Pyrek had a competition weight of 52 kg at a height of 1.68 m.
