Montaigut, Puy-de-Dôme

Montaigut (formerly Montaigut -en- Combraille ) is a commune with 1027 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Puy -de- Dôme in the Auvergne region. It belongs administratively to the district of Riom and the eponymous canton Montaigut whose headquarters it is.

Geography

The municipality is located in the countryside Combraille, about 25 kilometers southeast of Montlucon and 40 kilometers north-west of Riom. It is bordered on the north by the neighboring Allier. Neighboring communities of Montaigut are:

  • Buxières -sous- Montaigut in the Northeast,
  • Saint- Éloy -les -Mines to the east and southeast,
  • Youx in the south,
  • La Crouzille and Ars- les- Favets in the west and
  • La Celle in the northwest.

The town itself is located on the south side of a small hill. To the west rises the river Bouron, which was dammed here to Etang de la Prade and converted into a leisure center. The department D2144 road that leads from Riom by Montlucon, the municipality provides transport links.

History

The town's name comes from the hill Mons acutus, which occupied a strategic position between the Duchy of Auvergne and Bourbonnais. Montaigut was the capital of the former barony Combraille.
