Riom

Riom is a French town with 18,291 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Puy -de- Dôme in the Auvergne region. The city is the seat of the prefecture (French Sous- préfecture ) of the arrondissements Riom, this consists of 13 cantons, it is the capital (French: chef- lieu) of the cantons Riom Riom -Est -Ouest.

Riom is located on the river Ambène, north of Clermont -Ferrand.

History

Patron saint of Riom, in Gallo-Roman times Ricomagus, is the holy Amable, who died here in 475 AD. His relics are kept in the Basilica of Saint Amable de Riom and are still an important pilgrimage destination.

At the beginning of the 13th century, under Philip Augustus, was Riom seat of the royal administration. 1270 was Alfonso of Poitiers, brother of Saint Louis, expand the city.
