Montélimar

Montelimar is a commune with 35,372 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Drôme ( Rhône- Alpes). The inhabitants call themselves Monti Liens.

Geography

The city lies on the edge of Provence, the Rhone Valley, between Valence and Orange. At the western edge a navigable channel abbreviation of the Rhône, which is named after the city of Canal de Dérivation de Montelimar runs. In these also the tributary joins a Roubion after he Montelimar crosses.

History

Montelimar was built around a castle of Adhemar family from the 12th century. The family gave the city its name. Montelimar is derived from Petit Mont d' Adhemar ( "little mountain of Adhemar "). The castle and the historic center are preserved.

Attractions

Chateau des Adhemar is built on a hill Romanesque residential castle. It was built by the family Adhemar in the late 12th century and is regarded as the most important example of medieval architecture in the middle Rhone Valley. The castle was 1340-1383 papal possession and was used from the 15th to the early 20th century as a prison. Received from the castle are still a chapel from the 11th and residential interiors from the 12th century. Since the turn of the millennium contemporary art is on display in the castle.
