Monthey

Monthey is a municipality and capital of the district in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. The community is located along the Vièze that flows into the Rhône, and is part of the Swiss part of the landscape Chablais.

Geography

Monthey is located on the Rhône, the municipal boundary and the border with the Canton of Vaud in the northeast, between Lake Geneva and Martigny. The neighboring municipalities are Collombey, Chemex, Vérossaz, Massongex, Bex, Ollon. An exclave Montheys is located around 10 km south-west from the city center. This borders the municipalities Chemex and Val- d'Illiez and France. The highest point Montheys located in this enclave, Pointe de Chésery with 2,249 m above sea level. M. Monthey has four other enclaves within the community Collombey. The deepest point is 390 m above the Rhone. M.

History

The city stood since the 11th century under the rule of the House of Savoy and was administered by Viztumen and house Meiern. From 1536 to 1798 practiced Oberwalliser bailiffs from the rule.

Economy

Monthey is an important industrial center in the canton of Valais. There are many chemical factories: the most important are BASF, Syngenta and Cimo, a joint venture of the two former companies. The engineering company Giovanola had to give up due to insolvency in 2004. The engineering company Bolliger & Mabillard designed roller coasters worldwide. In Monthey further is the waste incineration plant SATOM SA. An oil refinery is located in neighboring Collombey.

Traffic

The A9 motorway, the SBB line St. Maurice - Saint Gingolph as well as the narrow gauge railway Chemin de fer Aigle- Ollon - Monthey- Champéry ( AOMC ) happen Monthey. Trains on AOMC and by car you can reach the nearby ski area " Portes du Soleil " in about 30-45 minutes.

Sports

The sporting showpiece of the city is the 2-fold Basketball Champion, the BBC Monthey.

Culture

Monthey Switzerland is well known for its carnival, which is one of the largest regional events on the activities in Basel and Lucerne and every year Guggenmusik attracts from all cantons.

Attractions

The Catholic parish church of Notre- Dame-de- l'Immaculée - Conception is a classical, three-aisled basilica with giebelbekröntem portico, built in 1851 by E. Vuilloud. Decor and furniture from the 19th to 20th centuries.

On the rue du Château is the New Castle, which was first mentioned in the 15th century and rebuilt in 1663-64 by the Upper Valais bailiffs entirely. The construction, which involves a medieval tower, consists of three applied to arcaded a building tracts.

The armory, a former tower from the middle ages, which was remodeled in the 17th century, can be found on the Rue de Bourg- aux- Favre.

There is the baroque chapel of Notre -Dame-du -Pont, a building on an oval ground plan with porch, which was rebuilt in 1775 on the Place de l' Hôtel de Ville. Inside is a Rococo altar with Pieta from the 15th century.
