Montisi

Montisi is a district of San Giovanni d' Asso in the province of Siena, Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The district is located 5 km east of the main village of San Giovanni d' Asso and 32 km southeast of the provincial capital, Siena at 413 m altitude in the Crete Senesi. The historic center is divided into the Castello, Piazza San Martino and Torre district.

History

First mentioned in writing the place was 1213 in a document by Rinaldo di Griffolini Monteghisi. In the 11th century the place was owned by the counts Scialenghi. From 1283 the town was independent municipality. When Simone di Ranuccio Cacciaconte deglia Scialenghi died in 1295, he left his possessions to the Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala. The hospital installed here a Grancia (similar to a tithe ) to the autonomous supply of the hospital. The building was sold in 1775 by Leopold II to Jacopo Mannucci Benincasa, whose heirs are the property of Grancia today. On June 30, 1944, destroyed similar main tower by German troops of the Mangia tower of the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena. Does today a restored theater with 58 seats. The once- independent town was in 1777, residence of the district. Since 1878, the place is one of San Giovanni d' Asso.

  • , Also called Pieve della Santissima Annunziata Church dell'Annnciazione or Assumption, Pieve and church in the village. Contains of Neroccio di Bartolomeo di Benedetto de ' Landi the painting Madonna col Bambino tra i Santi Paolo Giacomo Pietro, Luigi and Lodovico ( 1496 arose ).
  • Chiesa delle Sante Flora e Lucilla, church in the town center. The interior was restored in 1732.
  • Oratorio di Sant'Antonio abate della compagnia del Holy Sacrament, church from the 16th century facade and campanile from the year 1616. Interior of the church was restored in 1773. If the work contains Ultima Cena by Astolfo Petrazzi.
  • Santuario della Madonna delle Nevi ( Chiesa della Torricella ), 1649, inaugurated the church.
  • Oratorio di San Bartolomeo (also Cappella della Croce or Crocetta called ), oratorio, just outside the village, contains frescoes from the 14th century.
  • Chiesa di Santa Lucia church outside the village from the 17th century.
