Mordechai Namir

Mordechai Namir (Hebrew מרדכי נמיר, born Mordechai Nemirovsky as Hebrew מרדכי נמירובסקי; born February 23, 1897 in Nemyriw, † February 22, 1975 ) was an Israeli politician who served as Member of the Mapai from June 19, 1956 until 17 December 1959 was Minister of Labour. He was married to Ora Namir.

Life

He studied at a heder, and then he attended the University of Odessa, where he studied law and economics. In 1924 he was arrested by the Soviet authorities for his work for Zionism. Finally, he immigrated within the aliyah to Palestine. From 1926 to 1930 he was secretary of the Ahdut Haavoda. From 1951 to 1969 he was member of the Knesset Mapai and 1956-1959 Minister of Labour.
