Morikazu Toda

Morikazu Toda (Japanese戸 田 盛 和, Toda Morikazu; born October 20, 1917 in the prefecture of Tokyo; † 6 October 2010) was a Japanese physicist who deals with statistical mechanics.

Life

Toda studied physics at the Imperial University of Tokyo ( completion 1940), was from 1942 assistant professor at the Imperial University of Keijo (now Seoul National University ), and since 1949 assistant professor at the Pedagogical University of Tokyo (now the University of Tsukuba ). In 1952 he received his doctorate at the University of Tokyo and was later a professor at the Pedagogical University, where he was at the Research Institute of Optics from 1970 and was Professor Emeritus since 1975. In 1975 he went to the University of Chiba and 1976 to about 1983 at the State University of Yokohama. 1987 to 1989 he was at the Open University University of the Air (now the Open University of Japan). He was a visiting scientist at Caltech in 1955, 1956 at the Free University of Brussels, Visiting Professor in Sao Paulo (1970) and the Norwegian Institute of Technology in Trondheim ( 1973).

Toda is known for an exactly solvable model of statistical mechanics, the Toda lattice ( with exponentially decaying interaction of lattice neighbors), he studied from 1967 and Solitonenlösungen found ( as in the 1950s, Enrico Fermi, Pasta, Stanislaw Ulam in another grid the Fermi - pasta - Ulam experiment, what Toda served as excitation ).

He was in 1981 a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences. In 1981 he was awarded the Fujiwara Prize and in 1947 the Mainichi Cultural Prize.
