Moritz August von Thümmel

Moritz August von Thummel ( born May 27, 1738 in Schönefeld, † October 26, 1817 in Coburg ) was a German writer.

Life and work

Moritz August von Thummel was born in the manor Schönfeld bei Leipzig. He was a pupil of the convent school Roßleben and then studied at the University of Leipzig, 1761 squire was at Prince Ernst Friedrich and 1768 Privy Council and Minister Coburgischer, 1782 withdrew from the public stores and died on October 26, 1817 in Coburg.

Literary recognition earned Thümmel 1764 with his Wilhelmina, a short epic in six cantos. The witty little composition, as pleasant as bold (Goethe) brought the squire overnight great fame and was soon translated into several European languages. His main work, the journey in the mid-day provinces of France, met with his frivolous, uncomplicated nature and its sometimes bawdy humor the taste of a wide audience, so that it applies during his lifetime as the most widely read novelist in Germany. Nevertheless, his fame did not last long, and he fell into oblivion until the early 20th century were some publisher of his remembered and revive his work in bibliophile series works again (for example Wilhelmina, Drugulin pressure, Gustav Kiepenheuer Verlag, Leipzig 1917 or Otto Julius Bierbaum's books of the abbey Thelem, Georg Müller Verlag, Munich, 1919).

Thümmel proved in his writings as a kindred spirit and Christoph Martin Wieland's student. Meyers encyclopedia from 1888 to certify his work " a certain grace, fine observation and description of gift, next to of course also frivolity and wanton recklessness ".

Honors

In his memory, erected Coburg citizens in the mountain park of Schloss Falkenegg an obelisk with the symbols of his work and quotes from his work.
