Moritz Lazarus

Moritz ( Moses actually ) Lazarus ( born September 15, 1824 in Filehne (now Wieleń ) in the former Prussian province of Posen, † April 13, 1903 in Meran ) was a German psychologist. Together with his brother- Heymann stone valley it is one of the founders of the psychology of nations Herbartscher basis.

Life

Moritz Lazarus was the son of Aaron Levin Lazarus ( † February 26, 1874 ), a pupil of Akiba Eger. Together with his brother Lazarus visited Leyser school of the Jewish community in Filehne. From 1841 to 1844 he first completed a commercial apprenticeship in Poznan, and then until 1846 a German Gymnasium. Then Lazarus studied at the University of Berlin, the subjects philosophy, history and philology. Here he was a pupil of Johann Friedrich Herbart. 1850 Moritz Lazarus received his doctorate; and the same year he and Sarah married life home.

Also 1850, Lazarus decided to psychology and published a year later, an essay about the concept and the possibility of a national psychology as a science. In the publishing of Henry Schindler Moritz Lazarus published in 1856 the first volume in 1857 and the second volume of his work The life of the soul in his monographs on phenomena and laws. In the early 1880 followed in Dümmler publishing a third volume.

1859 Lazarus was appointed Honorary Professor at the University of Bern. He was the first Professor of Jewish origin in the philosophical faculty. Beginning in 1864, officiated Lazarus in Bern as rector and dean. In 1867 he accepted a position at the Prussian Military Academy in Berlin as professor of philosophy. 1874 Lazarus was appointed professor of philosophy at the University of Berlin.

After the death of his first wife, Sarah married life home in 1895 Moritz Lazarus and Ruth Nahida Remy. His second wife was converted to the Jewish faith by Lazarus effect.

Services

Moritz Lazarus regarded as a champion of the rights of Judaism and as the initiator of the magazine for folk psychology, which he edited together with Heymann stone valley. In 1891 it was renamed the journal of the Association for Folklore.

Under the chairmanship of Lazarus, the first Israelite synod was held in Leipzig in 1869, the rabbis, scholars and leading laymen from sixty communities in Germany, Austria and other countries of Europe and America gathered. This synod dealt with the reform movement in Judaism and approved for the first time some new forms of Jewish religious practices such as the use of the organ in the synagogue.

The sociologist Georg Simmel described himself as a student of international psychologists Lazarus, who had influenced his scientific look decisive.
