The moth is a modern and fast - rigged Cat -handed dinghy, which is mainly used for regatta sailing. It is the only of the International Sailing Federation (ISAF ) recognized single-handed dinghy class design. Because their measurement rules allow the designer considerable freedom to early modern materials have been enforced as carbon fibers. So little resistance is generated, the fuselage is only 35 inches wide. To compensate for the sail pressure from the 8- m ² - sailing, the sailor sitting on a 2.25 m wide cantilever frame. A recent construction (2006 ) ready to sail weighs around 30 kg.

The moth is professionally manufactured in Australia, England and Switzerland. A large percentage is produced despite increasingly elaborate construction home.

Since 2000 hydrofoil ( hydrofoils ) are developed that reduce hull resistance drastically lift the hull even at low speed out of the water and the boat speed almost doubled. The short-term achievable top speed of 30 knots and corresponds to a region that was previously twice as large boats reserved by almost eightfold sail area.

Larger distribution has existed since the 1928 class in Australia and England; smaller fleets sailing in the U.S., France, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
