The Motorola Xoom is a tablet computer manufacturer Motorola, which was presented at CES on 5 January 2011 for the first time and enters into direct competition with the iPad. It was the world's first tablet computer with the new operating system Android 3.0. In Germany, the " Xoom 3G " from 30 April 2011 was initially available exclusively at Telekom. Hardware
The Xoom has a 10.1-inch ( 25.65 cm) wide capacitive touch screen with 1280 × 800 pixel resolution. As a dual core CPU system-on -a- chip type Nvidia Tegra 2 T20 installed 1 GHz, the 1 GB DDR2 memory available to the side. For permanent data storage, flash memory is of 32 GB capacity. Software
The operating system was originally used Android 3.0 "Honeycomb". An update to version 3.1, which was only available in the USA first, was released on 26 August 2011 in Germany. As of 13 July 2011 was followed in the United States an update to Android 3.2, which is also available for German units since December 2011.
Beginning of 2012 was the release of Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich " for the WiFi version of the tablet. In July 2012, then Motorola also announced an update for the sold mainly in Europe 3G variant, which was also rolled out shortly thereafter and up to date over the air is distributed.
Successor
Successors are the Motorola Xoom 2 and Motorola Xoom 2 Media Edition (ME ), both run with the operating system Android 3.2 " Honeycomb". An update to Version 4 will follow in the third quarter of 2012. The Xoom 2 was first brought into the U.S. and the UK and in late January 2012 and in Germany in the trade. The Xoom 2 is similar to the predecessor technically very strong ( see tablet market overview), stands out visually but by characteristic graduated from corners. The Media Edition is 8.2 inches tall, with about 300 grams only half as heavy as the Xoom 2 and is designed by the manufacturer for the playback of media files.
Marketing
In the USA, a TV commercial is already running with allusions to the novel 1984 by George Orwell, who positioned the Xoom as an alternative to " mass product" Apple iPad. This includes, in reminiscence of Apple's famous commercial " 1984 " by Ridley Scott for the launch of the first Macintosh computer, in a sense, a clear parody of Apple's former campaign.
Another advertisement shows a multi-user multi-touch user interface that relies heavily on rotating pie menu. This does not reflect the actual interface of Android 3.2 " Honeycomb".
