1984 is the title of a U.S. computer manufacturer Apple commercials and advertising agency TBWA. He was listed in 1984 during Super Bowl XVIII and applied for the Macintosh at this time produced for the first time. The award-winning spot is considered a milestone in the advertising industry. Director of the one-minute promotional film was Ridley Scott.

1984 is based on the novel by George Orwell. In the spot, a young woman from Big Brother freed. It ends with a note on the Apple Macintosh, and that the year 1984 would not be like the novel 1984.

Content

In a colorless and gloomy world deadpan workers enter a hall with a huge screen ( telescreen ) in lockstep. The " Big Brother " speaks to them and praises the " association of ideas " to. Also seen is a young woman in sportswear running on the screen. In her hand she carries a big sledgehammer; she is pursued by several persons ( the thought police ). The woman brings out the liberation and hurls her hammer against the screen, the breaks and the audience beaming with flash light.

A voice-over proclaims:

"On January 24th, Apple Computer will introduce Macintosh. And you'll see why 1984 will not be like '1984 '. "

Background

The unnamed heroine of the spot wearing a top, on the dimly a Macintosh can be seen - the only picture of the advertised product in the film. It thus represents the company Apple. Regarding the Big Brother of the symbol there are different interpretations: A speech by Steve Jobs points out that by the rival IBM is symbolized, for the makers of the commercials he embodies the conformity per se and is not only limited on IBM.

The film had a budget of U.S. $ 900,000 ( equivalent today of about 2,100,000 U.S. dollars). Steve Jobs and John Sculley were impressed by his action and bought a minute and thirty seconds of advertising time during the Super Bowl. However, the Board was not convinced and therefore wanted to sell already purchased 90 seconds again. Since, however, could be sold just 30 seconds, it was the well-known one-minute version.
