It rises in the form of two separate source rivers, the Right Branch Motueka River and the Left Branch Motueka River at Mount Red Hill in Mount Richmond Forest Park ( Marlborough ), 60 kilometers south of Nelson. Shortly before his mouth it is crossed by State Highway 60, then north of Mouteka to flow into the Tasman Bay.

Rights tributaries are the Stanley Borok and the Dove River, left tributary of the River Motupiko, Wangapeka River, Baton River, Pearse River and Pokororo River.

The river flows near the town of Motueka ( Tasman Region ) in the Tasman Bay. It is used for fishing on rainbow trout, rafting and canoeing.
