Mount Azuma-kofuji

The Azuma - Kofuji (Japanese吾 妻 小 富士) is a volcanic mountain with Caldera west of the city of Fukushima. The height is given as 1707 meters.

Kofuji means " small Fuji". The mountain is part of a volcanic group, which consists of several andesitic and basaltic layer volcanoes, shield volcanoes, cinder cones and Lavadomen and is impressive to see the city from Fukushima. The highest point of the group of volcanoes located at 2035 meters. The Azuma volcanic complex are several crater lakes. The historically known eruptions, mostly small phreatic explosions took place in the area of Issaikyo crater at the north end of the volcanic group.

Volcanic eruptions cause a strong sulfurous odor in the vicinity of the mountain. Many onsen, hot springs, which are around the mountain to find at lower altitudes around, have this typical smell. Examples of nearby onsen are Takayu - Onsen, Noji Onsen, Akayu - Onsen, Tsuchiyu - Onsen.

Known outbreaks, which have been dated with the radiocarbon method: 5700 BC ( output of 2 million cubic meters of tephra ), 5400 BC (discharge of 800,000 cubic meters of tephra ), 3000 BC ( emissions of 500,000 cubic meters of tephra ), 2750 BC, 1800 BC, 950 BC, 150 BC and in 600 Historical records show more eruptions in 1331, 1711, 1800, 19 May to 13 July 1893 9 to 10 November 1893 16 March-12 April 1894 8 March to 13 September 1895 10th to February 19th 1950 and 7. December 1977.
